Neumann serial numbers are sequential and generally correspond to the production order of a particular model. For example, a U 87 with serial number 31926 was manufactured in April 1978, while a U 67 in the 5900 range was built in May 1967. For microphones manufactured after 2010, you can sometimes determine the year directly by examining the capsule. The last two digits of the year are often inscribed on the diaphragm ring with a black felt marker, though this is not always present on all models.
