A ruthless local drug lord who rules the hill with an iron fist. The film is a vibrant and gritty adaptation
For director Carlos "Cacá" Diegues, a veteran of Brazil's Cinema Novo movement, Orfeu was a passion project nearly four decades in the making. His ambition was to reclaim the story from the internationally acclaimed 1959 film Black Orpheus by Marcel Camus. While Diegues respected Camus's affection for Brazil, he felt the earlier film was a superficial, romanticized view of favela life from a foreign perspective.
Directed by Carlos Diegues, Orfeu (1999) remains one of the most vibrant and culturally significant films in modern Brazilian cinema. Set against the explosive, rhythmic backdrop of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnaval, this modern adaptation of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice captured global attention upon its release.
The film was critically acclaimed, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1960.
