The film opened in theaters just weeks before the 2007 Academy Awards ceremony. At that ceremony, Eddie Murphy was the overwhelming favorite to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his critically acclaimed, dramatic performance in Dreamgirls . The theory that went viral in entertainment circles was that the release of the crass, lowbrow Norbit so close to the Oscar vote reminded Academy members of the “old” Eddie Murphy, costing him the award. The narrative of Norbit follows a gentle, mild-mannered orphan named Norbit Albert Rice (played by Eddie Murphy). Raised in a Chinese restaurant-orphanage by the eccentric Mr. Wong (also played by Murphy), Norbit’s life takes a dramatic turn when he is rescued on the playground by Rasputia Latimore (Murphy once again), a towering, aggressive bully. The two eventually marry, trapping Norbit in a miserable, emotionally abusive relationship dominated by Rasputia and her three criminal brothers, the Latimore brothers.
