The film is based on the 2003 novel Inkheart by German author Cornelia Funke, which is the first book in her acclaimed "Inkworld" trilogy (followed by Inkspell and Inkdeath ). The book was an international bestseller. Funke was inspired to write the story after her daughter asked, "If you could read a character out of a book, why can't you read yourself in?". Interestingly, Funke has said she based the character of Mo on actor Brendan Fraser before he was ever cast in the film.
