A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale School of Drama, Kaczmarek's early career was a blend of prestige television and guest-starring roles. Her first professional role was as Mrs. Wilkes in the 1983 film Uncommon Valor . Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in shows that served as a launching pad for many actors, such as Remington Steele , Hill Street Blues , St. Elsewhere , and Scarecrow and Mrs. King . These small but impactful roles in some of the era's best dramas helped her hone her craft alongside legends of the small screen.
