The narrator is (whose real name, we later learn, is Eliseo), a cynical and skeptical pilot. He is selected alongside another pilot, a man nicknamed "Jason," to form part of a team of "timenauts." They are sent back to the past using a technology that is never fully detailed, maintaining a mysterious and ambiguous aura. Once in 1st-century Jerusalem, the pilots integrate into society, and Major becomes an involuntary witness to the events that would change the course of Western history.
