Sixteen years later, we find Claudia Mares, now a deputy police chief in Rome. She is called back to Palermo by her friend and colleague, Stefano Lauria, who heads the "Gruppo Duomo" – the special anti-mafia squad that famously arrested the notorious boss Bernardo Provenzano. However, as they meet at the Palermo airport, Lauria is assassinated by a hitman before he can reveal critical information about corrupt politicians linked to Cosa Nostra. Following his death, Claudia Mares is appointed as the new leader of the "Duomo" squad.
