In 1935, the Emperor appointed a committee of Ethiopian scholars to begin a fresh translation. This massive undertaking was interrupted by the Italian invasion and World War II. However, upon his return from exile, Haile Selassie prioritized the completion of the project. The committee resumed work, cross-referencing ancient Ge'ez manuscripts with Greek and Hebrew originals.
