In the late 16th century, Japan was a country in disarray. For decades, the great daimyos had been vying for power, and the once-mighty Ashikaga shogunate had been reduced to a mere puppet regime. The arrival of the Portuguese in the 1540s had introduced firearms and new ideas to Japan, which further destabilized the country. By the 1580s, three powerful daimyos – Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu – had emerged as the dominant forces in Japan. Shogun Showdown
